Demolition begins on a century old catholic cathedral in Apia today.

The Immaculate Conception of Mary Cathedral, known as Mulivai cathedral, in central Apia, is being torn down over concerns over its safety.

Falani Tupuola was baptised and married in the church, and was an altar boy.

He says his is the fourth generation of the family to be involved in the church, and the loss is huge.

"The main theme of today's reading is the foundation. And somehow this is our foundation. This is quite solid from this church, and it has been a blessing to have such a church, and it is a shame to pull it down."
