Pacific told La Nina weather pattern continuing

8:17 am on 9 March 2011

Pacific weather agencies say a strong La Nina state is continuing in the equatorial Pacific region, but is showing signs of weakening.

They say normal to above normal tropical cyclone activity is expected until the end of the season at about the end of next month.

The weather experts say increased activity to the west of Fiji in the Coral Sea and North Tasman region is anticipated, with an elevated risk for Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and New Zealand.

Below normal rainfall is forecast for western Kiribati, Tuvalu, Tokelau, the northern Cook Islands, the Marquesas and the Tuamotu archipelago.

There have been eight tropical cyclones to date this season.
