Northern Marianas residents advised to stay on higher ground for a while yet

12:42 am on 12 March 2011

The acting governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, Eloy Inos, is advising the public to remain on higher ground as assessments are still made on the impact of the tsunami on the territory.

He is advising all residents to wait until an all clear order is issued.

Mr Inos says the CNMI Emergency Management Office has confirmed there's been wave activity throughout the region and the tsunami warning issued late yesterday afternoon is still in effect.

Spokesperson Angel Demapan says significant ongoing activity means the precautionary measures have to remain in effect.
