Tongans heed tsunami warning and flee to higher ground

6:06 am on 12 March 2011

Thousands of people in Tonga's capital capital Nuku'alofa are seeking refuge at the King's residence.

The residence is located on elevated land and it became the target for shelter by people fleeing during previous Tsunami warnings.

Vehicles packed with people, including women and children have set up camps or are remaining in their vehicles at the King's residence.

They have with them candles, lamps, food items, pillows and some beddings.

Radio Tonga news says the marine office there has not reported any significant wave activity yet.

Radio Tonga reporter, Ella Toke, says locals acted quickly once information came through.

"By the time they received the warning from Radio Tonga, and also from family overseas, people had already moved to higher ground."
