An estimated 200 people joined a public sit-in in French Polynesia called by a former minister who lost his portfolio last month.
The gathering in Papeete was led by Teva Rohfritsch who has now launched a citizens' movement to call for the resignation of the President, Gaston Tong Sang, and for France to arrange fresh general elections.
Mr Rohfritsch says enough is enough and a way out of the political and economic crisis has to be found.
Mr Tong Sang has so far refused to implement the budget adopted by the assembly last month and instead published his own version as the only official one.
A French court decision is due this week to determine which budget is valid.
The pro-independence opposition has been talks with minor groups to discuss a possible motion of no confidence.
