Pacific Climate Change Roundtable in Niue to focus on funding

11:35 am on 14 March 2011

Niue is preparing to host 100 delegates for this week's Pacific Climate Change Roundtable.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme's Climate Change Advisor, Espen Ronneberg, says the meeting in Niue will mobilise resources to help the region cope with impending climate challenges.

He says a key issue is organising funding for climate change adaptation.

"There's all sorts of possibilities; seeking a special concession in the existing funds for example, or looking at having an institution in the region specifically dedicated to climate change financing for the region, or entrusting one of the existing financial institutions to do that work."

Mr Ronneberg says there is also a shortage of people with technical expertise in the region and this needs to be addressed.

He says he hopes the conference will produce some action that will make a difference.
