Australia's foreign minister says New Zealand and Australian diplomats are not in the business of legitimising an ugly miliitary coup in Fiji.
There's been criticism that the two countries continually calling for a return to democracy in Fiji is the wrong approach.
Kevin Rudd told TVNZ's Q and A programme that people have to stop asking what is wrong with New Zealand and Australia's foreign policy
"That we have somehow failed in the Bainimarama test of causing him to conclude that it is not right to sack your entire judiciary, that it is not right therefore to incarcerate ministers of religion, that it is not right to interfere with religious convention on denominations of the Christian religion, that it is not right to close down the media, that it is not right to suspend elections. Bainimarama is the one who must change here."
Kevin Rudd says New Zealand and Australian diplomacy continues to be active and vigorous in engaging Fiji's regime.
