Japan and the Cook Islands announce formal diplomatic link

The Cook Islands and Japan have formally entered into diplomatic relations and prime minister, Henry Puna, says it will bring the Cooks significant benefits.

The Japanese ministry of foreign affairs' announced the link at the weekend.

Mr Puna says it sets a firm basis for strengthening cooperation between the two nations.

He says tourism, trade, combating climate change, promoting the use of renewable energy along with other development issues will benefit from the formal ties.
