The New Zealand Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs says it hopes a Pacific Islands Language Strategy will be presented before the November election.
Work has been ongoing at the Ministry to develop a framework to protect and promote the use of Pacific languages in New Zealand.
The ministry's chief executive, Colin Tukuitonga, says consultations are still continuing with Pacific communities.
"We've been working on this for a while, and so basically we are now at the home straight, in terms of actually producing what we might call a Pacific Languages framework, and presenting that to our minister and government for endorsement."
Colin Tukuitonga says Pacific languages are an integral part of New Zealand culture and its future population.
