The Papua New Guinea foreign minister, Don Polye, says the Melanesian Spearhead Group wants to have a rapid response force amid growing security concerns within its membership.
Mr Polye says the MSG does not want to be caught unaware in a crisis situation.
He says an initial set-up cost of 2.2 million US dollars for the force has been put to MSG leaders for their consideration.
Mr Polye says it's not a new concept, previously there has been a police and military force in Bougainville and recently the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands.
