Hope for revitalised fishing industry in American Samoa

2:32 pm on 4 April 2011

There are hopes American Samoa's fishing industry will be revitalised following fresh commitment to the territory from the Starkist tuna cannery.

Its new CEO has just been visiting American Samoa and signalled furthur investment but also called on the local government to assist by providing better facilities like increased freezer storage.

Our correspondent in Pago Pago Monica Miller says American Samoa used to be one of the top ports of call for fishing boats but has lost out with the onset of stiffer competition and high fuel prices.

"The company has said that they're going to try and make American Samoa an attractive place for fishing boats to come to so that there will be added benefits. When fishing boats are based here not only do they buy fuel they also patronise stores, restaurants, nightclubs."
