Struggling Northern Marianas government to slash next year's budget

The Governor of the Northern Marianas, Benigno Fitial, is planning a budget of just 102 million US dollars in the coming financial year.

That is less than half the amount he allowed for when he first came to office in 2006 and 30 million dollars less than the original budget for the current year.

The 2012 proposed budget is also close to the government estimates from 20 years ago.

The estimated gross income for 2012 is nearly 121 million dollars.

Of this amount, only 102 million is available for spending by government agencies.

The rest is set aside for debt servicing and bond payments, among other things.
