The acting Chief Executive of the Sugar Cane Growers Council in Fiji, Sundresh Chetty, says farmers are increasingly optimistic over the industry.
There have been years of bad crushing seasons, with mill breakdowns and poor returns to farmers.
But Mr Chetty says the interim government has now taken control of operations at the Fiji Sugar Corporation and better performances are expected in the upcoming crushing season.
He says millions of Fiji dollars in incentives to increase planting along with fertiliser subsidies are slowly having an effect:
"Definitely there's been a lot of planting, government has put in six million Fiji dollars for cane replanting programme last year and they have once again pumped in six million this season, and the uptake is there."
