Six opposition MPs in Solomon Islands switch to government side

9:44 am on 7 April 2011

A spokesperson for the Solomon Islands Prime Minister says six opposition members have switched to the government, including former leader Steve Abana.

The Prime Minister's press secretary David Tuhanuku says the other opposition members to cross the floor are Rick Hou, Andrew Hanaria Keniasia, Clay Soalaoi, Connelly Sandabatu and Peter Tom.

Mr Tuhanuku says the government now has 37 members, and the Prime Minister is confident of defeating the opposition's motion of no confidence if the new opposition leader Derek Sikua chooses to proceed with it.

He says he can not comment on why the opposition members have switched sides.

But the Solomon Star is quoting a source who says they wanted to show their dislike of the opposition member who was behind the removal of Steve Abana as leader.
