A local government official in Papua New Guinea says the town of Kimbe is returning to normal after rioting at the weekend.
The death of a man who was alleged beaten by police officers is believed to have sparked the rioting.
Garvasius Rovi, from the office of the West New Britain provincial administrator, says two shops were destroyed, while others were damaged and looted, banks and a post office were stoned, and a treasury building was burnt down.
He says police reinforcements from Port Moresby will stay in Kimbe for 21 days and the situation is improving
"Everything is open again, the shops are open the banks are often, as well as post office, except some Asian shops. Probably some of the things are still not okay with them."
