Chile promotes Easter Island tourism

1:41 pm on 13 April 2011

A major promotion of Easter Island is being launched in a joint effort by the Chilean authorities and private businesses on Rapa Nui.

As part of a campaign, labelled Discover South America, 40 international tourism operators from North America, Europe and Australia will be invited to visit the island.

A senior government official in the tourism sector says the promotion is to increase the number of visitors to what she says is a unique destination at the global level.

The promotion is also supported by the national carrier, LAN.

This comes after Rapa Nui had seen a series of violent confrontations in the past year between armed security forces and local clans calling for the return of what they call ancestral land.
