Rota offers refuge for Japanese quake, tsunami victims

7:09 pm on 13 April 2011

The Mayor of Rota in the Northern Marianas has offered to accommodate around 200 Japanese affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami last month.

In a letter printed in at least one newspaper in Japan, Melchor Mendiola said he's willing to support the victims of the Japan disasters by providing housing and food.

In the same article, the mayor was quoted as saying that the people of Rota have learnt many things from the Japanese and that Rota has benefited from Japanese tourist arrivals on the island.

Meanwhile, Lt. Governor Eloy Inos is leading a CNMI contingent bound for Tokyo to attend the Japan Marianas Tourism Club meeting.

The event will tackle travel opportunities and challenges, especially in the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
