Fono expense allowance checks released in American Samoa

10:29 am on 22 April 2011

The American Samoa Treasury has released the first of two expense allowance checks for members of the Fono.

The checks are for the last pay period in March which should have been out four weeks ago.

Treasury has yet to release the expense allowance checks for the most recent government payperiod.

A Fono staffer says he doesn't expect those checks to be ready until next week.

Earlier this week, the fono leaders wrote to Governor Togiola Tulafono about the delay in issuing the checks which are provided by law.

Only the Senate President Gaoteote Palaie and House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale were privy to the letter to the governor.

KHJ News understands the letter raised the possibility of legal action if the checks were not released.

The delay in releasing the checks followed the government's statement that he was considering withholding the checks if local revenues didn't improve.
