Micronesian leaders look to develop local policy think tanks

Moves are underway to develop an informal Micronesia policy network in Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands.

Leaders from those three countries gathered in Pohnpei earlier this month to discuss strategies for strengthening local public policy processes.

The Pacific Institute of Public Policy, which facilitated the meeting, says a number of strategies were identified, including policy design, monitoring and evaluation, and accountability functions.

The Institute's executive director, Derek Brien, says strategies proposed called for more in-country policy research and analysis.

IN:......A number of the participants have flagged up the idea of, amongst many strategies that were discussed, having an independent local think tank that would be able to provide analysis and increase debate on pressing policy issues but also to be able to support the legislature.
