American Samoa looking to hit rugby sevens circuit

The chairman of the American Samoa Rugby Union, Governor Togiola Tulafono, has argued for the inclusion of a team in the rugby sevens calendar.

The governor says he raised the issue at the recent Federation of Oceania Rugby Union's meeting in Wellington.

He says that despite the lateness in submission of American Samoa's request, it has been granted, which means the territory has a spot in upcoming Pacific rugby tournament's, including one set for October in Samoa.

Togiola says that if Team American Samoa does well, the IRB would provide funds for the team's travel as well as coaches and other expenses.

The Governor also requested assistance from the IRB to provide insurance coverage for teams from the territory while they are on tour.

He said another issue he raised is for American Samoa to be a full member of the International Rugby Board, instead of its current status as associate member.
