Cane farmers in Nasau, Nadi are urging the FSC and the Sugar Industry Research Institute of Fiji to identify and help them control an unknown weed that is spreading in their cane farms.

Prominent cane farmers in the area Hari Prasad, Kamlesh Kumar and Girdhar Prasad told FBC News they are concerned at the rate at which the weed is spreading and the difficulty in controlling it.

Mr Prasad says the unknown weed was never discovered until after the heavy rain and flooding in 2009.

The weed is close to three feet in height, has tiny thorns from its base to the top including leaves and can only be handled with protective gear.
