The newly-elected president of the Port Vila Town Council of Women in Vanuatu says the organisation's been reactivated in order to help overhaul the National Council of Women.
Lily Hanghangkon says members of all of the women's groups in the capital voted in the election for the council's six members.
She says neither the former Town Council of Women nor the National Council of Women have been doing their job, which is to help the capital's disadvantaged women.
"After we set up this with the help of all women in Vanuatu then we can have the National Council of Women which is the national umbrella in Vanuatu to reinstate again because at the moment both the National Council of Women and also the Town Council have fall for roughly three years to four years now."
Lily Hanghangkon says she wants the council to help Vanuatu achieve economic independence.
