Employees of CNMI's power provider won't get wages on payday

Employees of the financially troubled Commonwealth Utilities Corporation in the Northern Mariana Islands will not receive their wages on payday tomorrow.

According to the Marianas Variety, a statement addressed to the utility's division managers says cash flow issues have meant payroll and allotments will not be released until Monday.

About 330 employees, including those in managerial positions, will be affected by the payroll delay.

The utility's Executive Director Abe Utu Malae, told the Marianas Variety, the delay is caused by insufficient funds, which were used to purchase diesel to run its power plants.

The utility spent over 54 million US dollars in fuel to run its power, water and sewer facilities in the past financial year, a 16 percent lift on the previous year.
