The Pacific Islands Forum secretariat has announced dates for this year's leaders' summit to be held in Auckland.

Sub-regional groupings such as the small island states meet on the 6th of September with the summit's formal opening on Wednesday the 7th.

The leaders will hold a retreat on Thursday, while a post Forum dialogue will be held on the Friday.

The leaders are also expected to attend the opening of the rugby World Cup on Friday the 9th, when Tonga play the All Blacks at Eden Park.

It's 40 years since the the regional body first met in Wellington and secretary general, Tuiloma Neroni Slade, says there'll be a reflective aspect to this gathering.

He says it's an important milestone.

"It's obviously a time for Forum leaders to reflect on what has been done, reflect no doubt about the Forum itself, what has been done in that time, what the challenges are now and for the future."
