There are reports from Niue linking last weekend's election to the alleged arson of a house on the island.

The Niue Confidential website reports there was violence at the small village of Hikutavake on election night in which one house was burnt down.

It says an arson investigation is underway, while police are holding two men in custody and interviewing others from the village.

The destroyed house belonged to the son of the village's MP, Opili Talafasi, who was narrowly re-elected in the poll.
