Cooks people await court hearing for more drugs bust information

1:00 pm on 10 May 2011

It will be the end of the week before more details are revealed about a drugs bust in the Cook Islands in which 13 people have been charged with a total of 55 charges.

The arrests follow a combined Cook Islands/New Zealand police operation.

One of those arrested is a former prominent Auckland detective but other details cannot be released.

The editor of the Cook Islands News, John Woods, says since police announced the arrests at the end of last week, there is a lot of conjecture in the community.

"[In]most people's eyes this has been received as wonderful news and great pro-active police work and a real break through, but boy, has it set the gossip mongering going. There is constant conjecture and guesswork as to who's been apprehended, as to who's been charged, as to what types of drugs are involved."

John Woods says all 13 are being held in custody until a scheduled appearance criminal court session on Thursday when it's expected more details will be made public.
