Police in New Caledonia get speed cameras in bid to reduce road fatalities

7:05 pm on 10 May 2011

Police in New Caledonia will begin using mobile speed cameras from tomorrow as part of a campaign aimed at reducing the number of fatal road accidents.

Figures for last year show excessive speed was found to be a factor in 45 percent of road deaths, but so far this year more than two thirds of road fatalities have been blamed on speeding.

As a result, local and French authorities have together disbursed 640,000 US dollars to buy speed cameras which will be deployed in the Noumea area.
