Tonga looks to revive its copra export industry

The Tonga government has plans to revive its copra export industry in time to start freighting copra to Fiji by August.

Pousima Afeaki from Tinopai Farm, who has been exporting coconuts to New Zealand, says it supports the government's initiative, and believes that there are plenty of coconuts in the bush to be collected and processed into copra.

However he believes the difficult part is how to motivate the people to get involved.

Other growers and exporters in Tonga say its unlikely that anyone will be able to revive the copra industry in time for exports to begin in just a few months.

The Matangi Tonga Online website reports Tonga ceased exporting copra during the late 1960s.
