Post Fiji convicts succeed in getting case into appeal court

2:40 pm on 12 May 2011

The Fiji Court of Appeal Judge Justice William Marshall has given a former Post Fiji Chairman Mahendra Patel and a former Managing Director Peni Mau leave to appeal their conviction.

Last month, the two were jailed for a year and nine months respectively for abuse of office in connection with a clock purchase.

The Fijivillage website says they will have their case heard on appeal but will remain jailed until the sitting expected in August or September.

The decision by Justice Marshall comes a day after the anti-corruption body sought to have the judge disqualified for alleged bias.

Patel is also to reappear in the High Court in Suva in September for another trial.

Patel, whose business interests include the Fiji Times, is charged with two counts of abuse of office and two counts of conspiracy to defraud.
