PNG government says telco sector improving fast

The Papua New Guinea government says improvements to the country's telecommunications sector are happening quickly.

The Secretary of the Department of Communication and Information, Henao Iduhu says this is due to the recent opening up of the telecommunications market as well as the development of the massive Liquified Natural Gas project.

This comes as the mobile phone company Digicel launches a new broadband service, making the internet more accessible to anyone with a 3G-enabled handset.

Mr Iduhu says that construction of a 750-kilometre fibre optic cable will help rural people access the internet while also meeting the demand of foreigners coming to work on the LNG project.

"And they want to take advantage of the 3-G technology usage in the country to stay connected and to make business with their clients abroad, or stay connected with members of their family."
