Swains island seeks clarity over its role in American Samoa

The representative for Swains Island, Alex Jennings, says he hopes the island's place in American Samoa will be brought to the forefront.

On Friday, Swains is marking the 86th anniversary of the first raising of the US flag on the island.

Mr Jennings has written to the Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin asking for his assistance to clarify what he says is the ambiguous distinction given Swains island.

He says of the current fiscal year budget for the American Samoa Government, Swains is getting less than half a percent.

"I tried desperately through the constitutional convention to try to clarify our relationship. Swains has a peculiar relationship, we have very little voice in the government, and I have even written a letter to the congressman requesting a congressional investigation to give me a clarification on our relationship with American Samoa, even with the United States."
