A kiwifruit picker with typhoid fever who has sparked a large recall of fruit in New Zealand was a recently arrived seasonal worker from Samoa.
The Kiwifruit marketer, Zespri, plans to destroy more than 100,00 trays of fruit to make sure the disease does not spread.
The Department of Labour says the kiwifruit picker is a worker from Samoa who came to New Zealand under the Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme.
A Bay of Plenty medical officer of health, Neil de Wet, says the man had only been in the country nine days before he fell sick and was sent to hospital.
He says the fruit picker will be released today but kept isolated and under watch for several weeks at least.
