The National Disaster Centre in Papua New Guinea says there have been no reports of damage or injuries following a 6.5-magnitude earthquake this morning.

The tremor struck at about 4.30 local time, beneath the sea off Papua New Guinea, about 120 kilometres west of the autonomous province of Bougainville.

The quake prompted a local tsunami alert but the National Disaster Centre says it is not aware of any tsunami threat to PNG.
