American Samoa's lieutenant governor, Faoa Aitofele Sunia, has been hospitalised for the past week with pneumonia.

He'd gone to the hospital for a check up because he wasn't feeling well and was advised it would be best if he was admitted.

Faoa has been serving as the acting director of education following the removal of the former director Taimalelagi Dr Claire Poumele, last month.

He'd been assigned to oversee the department for 60 days after it was put on high risk status by federal authorities.

Faoa was also to help the department gain approval for its consolidated grant application and to speed up its spending of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act monies.
