American Samoa's Territorial Audit Office says the Customs Division of the Treasury Department is ineffective at generating additional revenue on undeclared and undervalued goods.

Territorial Auditor Robert Dantini says excise taxes are responsible for about half of the local revenue generated by the American Samoa Government every fiscal year and its important the Customs Division is as efficient and effective as possible.

The audit office says that from fiscal year 2006 through 2010, the average annual additional excise tax revenue generated as a result of discovering undeclared goods was about 46,000 US dollars.

During that same period, the average annual amount of excise taxes collected was over 23 million dollars.
