Vanuatu's Minister of Finance Moana Kalosil Carcasses says a new company's being set up to handle cargo at the wharves in Luganville following claims of fund mismanagement by the provincially owned Northern Islands Stevedoring Company.
Mr Carcasses has laid a criminal complaint against NISCOL after a damning report by government appointed investigators.
Mr Carcasses says there will be a period of transition and liquidators appointed before the wharf's management is put up for tender.
"We have the obligation to make sure that the services of the wharf continue to work so that's why we need to make sure that it's in place. I have met already with the harbourmaster and we have told him that he has to take over in the meantime until a new company is set up."
Mr Carcasses says he wants to make sure the new arrangement is transparent and that the people of the northern provinces are the ones to benefit.
