Temaru renews call for halving of French Polynesia's pays

The French Polynesian president, Oscar Temaru, has called for all incomes to be cut in half to improve the territory's economy.

In an interview with the Nouvelles de Tahiti, Mr Temaru repeated his call for a massive drop in the income of government employees but added that the cuts should be extended to the private sector.

He says such action is needed to make French Polynesia more competitive.

The territory's tourism industry has declined in the past decade and other sectors have failed to achieve growth.
