New Caledonia Government says work continues on economic reforms

8:04 am on 31 May 2011

The New Caledonian government says recent political instability will not have an impact on efforts to address protests over the cost of living.

Thousands have marched around the French territory in recent weeks.

The protests come after the collapse of four governments this year over which flag the territory should use.

A spokesperson for the government Cameron Diver says it hasn't hampered the administration's efforts to consult the community and it's on track to announce a package of measures in the next few weeks.

"In terms of the relations the government has that are ongoing with the business community, with consumers and general citizens , there's been no vacuum of power if you like. There has always been a president of the government. There have always been members of the government in charge of the various portfolios."
