ADB would consider giving more money to Tonga

The Asian Development Bank says it would consider giving more financial assistance to Tonga to help the country get back into the black.

The ADB is providing Tonga with the second five million US dollar tranche of its Economic Support programme ahead of the Tongan government improving financial accountability.

ADB senior country specialist Emma Veve says the money will help the government finance its budget deficit.

She says the Bank would contemplate giving Tonga more financial assistance.

"At the moment we're planning to continue supporting Tonga through project based assistance but would government want further programmes of budget support we would be happy to consider those and i think we've seen quite positive things come out of this recent programme of support to government."
