The Solomon Islands Foreign Minister says he would like the country to be used as a testing ground for renewable energy cars being developed by South Korea.

Peter Shanel has expressed his interest in the cars following last week's first Korea-Pacific Islands Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Seoul.

Mr Shanel says South Korea is working to create cars using renewable energy such as solar power and says Solomon Islands could benefit from the project.

"We've asked Korea. And we could be used as a trial place here. Or they could develop this car and we could use it here. Our country could be used as a trial to some of these renewable energy cars."

Peter Shanel says the use of renewable energy cars will help Solomon Islands cut down on its fossil fuel consumption.
