Fiji hails departing Chinese ambassador

1:29 pm on 10 June 2011

The Fiji interim government has farewelled the Chinese ambassador, Dr Han Zhiqiang, describing him as a true friend of Fiji.

The interim foreign minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, thanked Dr Han for his work in bringing together the two countries.

During Dr Han's posting, China's assistance has increased significantly and the interim government has credited him for this.

China has become a key development partner as the regime in Suva has been increasingly at odds with traditional partners.

European Union assistance has been curtailed for reneging on a promise to restore democratic government.
