Lack of fish forces temporary shutdown at Fiji factory

Fiji's Pacific Fishing Company Limited, or PAFCO, is closing the doors of its Levuka factory for this week due to a shortage in the supply of fish.

The company's Chairman Peniasi Kunatuba has told the Fiji Times newspaper that the shipment of fish overseas and a poor fishing season have contributed to the shortage.

Mr Kunatuba says the closure of the factory would allow PAFCO to accumulate enough stock for production.

He says at least 800 employees will not get paid this week and says only those involved in essential services will be required to work.

Mr Kunatuba has also stressed the need to address the issue of transshipment in order to keep the factory running longterm.
