PNG's Polye says he will continue to support government

The Papua New Guinea MP Don Polye says he will continue to support the National Aliance-led government under Sam Abal despite the acting Prime Minister sacking him as Foreign Minister.

Mr Polye and Mr Abal are embroiled in a struggle for the position of the next National Alliance leader.

The current leader, veteran Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare, has been away from work for two months undergoing medical treatment in Singapore and is expected to retire soon.

Don Polye says his sacking could be related to his stand on key issues including the proposal over housing asylum seekers for Australia as well as matters relating to the large Liquified Natural Gas project.

"And I've got my completely different views on those issues and other issues. Some of those issues may not have been seen on the same wavelength by the acting PM and others and that could have prompted the decision that has been made. But like I said, that is the prerogative of the acting Prime Minister."
