Fiji interim government considers becoming an arms manufacturer

Fiji is looking at setting up a manufacturing plant for firearms and ammunition.

FBC News reports the plan was presented in Bali earlier this month during consultations on the Arms Trade Treaty, a new international agreement being negotiated at the United Nations.

The report says a senior officer with Fiji's Ministry of Defence, Joji Washington, told the meeting the initiative is subject to further consultations with government stakeholders and non governmental organisations.

He says laws are in place which would regulate such a plant but the government needs to review these to meet Treaty requirements.
