Tonga Rugby Union Authority says it will front sub-committee

1:43 pm on 28 June 2011

The Tonga Rugby Union Authority has confirmed it will appear before a parliamentary sub-committee, saying there was a miscommunication over its availability.

The sub-committee, which is charged with sorting out issues ahead of the Rugby World Cup, was set up in response to MP Sangster Saulala calling for the current members to be replaced.

Mr Saulala was himself dumped as board chair two years ago amid concerns about financial mismanagement.

An initial request to attend the sub-committee was rejected but the deputy chairman of the Authority, Aminiasi Kefu, says that offer was made at short notice and the directors were already busy.

He says now he has some free time, he'll attend.

"Board's position has always been that the board should attend with its full members there. Unfortunately the chairman is away to deal with other personal matters and that was already scheduled, but I'll be representing the board, just to answer any enquiries for the committee this evening."
