Decolonisation vote in French Polynesia assembly deferred

6:57 pm on 28 June 2011

The president of the French Polynesian assembly has deferred indefinitely this week's planned sitting to discuss the government's decolonisation bid and its planned spending cuts.

This comes amid the apparent loss of a majority to endorse President Oscar Temaru's proposed resolution to seek French Polynesia's reinscription on the UN list of territories to be decolonised.

The vote has been resisted by the so-called pro-autonomy camp which has labelled the planned move as an affront to the French state.

The government has been meeting to discuss planned cuts to the public service which is a condition for a new French loan to deal with the territory's unprecedented economic crisis.
