Tonga government backs rugby board and commits thousands for World Cup

The Tonga government has agreed to back the Rugby Union Authority's board, in the meantime at least, and has committed about 600 thousand US dollars of public funds for the rugby world cup.

A parliamentary sub-committee has this week been considering a petition calling for the board to be replaced.

Our correspondent, Mateni Tapueluelu, says the government is delaying a full decision for two weeks but it's expected to maintain its support and ensure the national team is well prepared for the World Cup.

"Management will stay the same and the government will continue to support rugby with one million Tongan pa'anga because it is a national issue coming up real quick. It is one that Tongans are proud of."
