The French National Assembly has followed the Senate in approving a change to New Caledonia's electoral law.
This means that any new government in New Caledonia will be given an 18-month grace period.
The change was prompted by the serial resignations earlier this year when the Caledonia Together brought down the collegial government three times in four weeks.
Under the old electoral system, a single minister's resignation immediately triggered a government's collapse.
The Caledonia Together resignations were linked to a demand for fresh general elections amid a yet unresolved dispute over which flag the territory should adopt as part of its decolonisation process.
