Fiji police have cracked down on a planning retreat of a women's NGO, taking a prominent activist to the station.
The Fiji's Women's Rights Movement was holding its retreat and planning meeting at a resort in Pacific Harbor this morning.
Megan Whelan has more.
"Radio New Zealand International understands police visited the resort and asked whether the meeting had a permit under the Public Emergency Regulations. Despite being told the event was an internal meeting, and therefore did not need a permit, the movement's Executive Director, Virisila Buadromo, and a lawyer were asked to accompany police to the Pacific Harbor station so a statement could be taken. It's understood no charges were pressed, but police insisted the meeting be dispersed and that that should be viewed as a warning. A police spokesperson declined to comment."
