The King of Tonga will have tea with Tongan soldiers in the New Zealand army this afternoon.

King George Tupou the 5th arrived on Saturday for his first formal visit to New Zealand.

This afternoon he'll be welcomed by a guard of honour and powhiri at Linton Military Base near Palmerston North where he'll view equipment, and talk to Tongan members of the New Zealand force.

Tomorrow morning he'll lay a wreath at the National War Memorial in Wellington before meeting the Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand.

The King will then meet Prime Minister John Key and the Leader of the Labour Party Phil Goff before a state dinner at Government House tomorrow evening.
